Rebuy Tournament Strategy

Rebuy Tournament Strategy

Rebuy tournaments are not very different from a standard tournament, but for some reason players like to overreact to what should be a relatively small change in tournament structure. The rebuy period is the only part of the tournament that is different from a regular tournament.

The standard strategy in a rebuy tournament seems to be to play wildly aggressive in the first few blind structures. The line of thinking is “If I bust out early I can just rebuy into the tournament and try again.” The problem with thinking like this is that it will end up costing you so much money that even a cash in the tournament won’t earn you any money.

You can only invest so much before your entry fees are too large for you to have a positive long term expected gain. In a standard tournament you only pay one buy in fee to enter, when you get knocked out you accept it and move on. In a rebuy tournament, however, there is no limit to the amount of buy in fees that you could waste if you do not stop yourself.

Poker Tilt Tips

Tilting plays a very different role in rebuy tournaments. If you bust out of a regular tournament you have no choice but to quit that particular game, but a rebuy tournament will allow for a player on tilt to rejoin as many times as their bankroll will allow. If you don’t have self-control it will be difficult to come out a winner playing rebuy tournaments.

Don’t Change Your Game – Strategy for Rebuy Poker Tournaments

Many players like to try and play in a fancy style in the early stages of a rebuy tournament. They think that the different structure means that they will only be able to win if they radically change their style of play. The reality, however, is that you should simply play how you would in any other tournament. Don’t rebuy into a tournament if you do not have an edge.

Would you play in a normal tournament if you didn’t think that you could make some money? If the answer to this question is no then you shouldn’t be rebuying into a rebuy tournament where you have no edge either. The same basic tournament strategy will work across the entire spectrum of tournaments.

The difference in a rebuy tournament is that you can loosen your range up a little bit during the rebuy stage. The other players will inevitably be playing much more aggressively than they typically would be and this will provide you with an opportunity to exploit their wild play.

It doesn’t mean that you have to start actually making aggressive moves yourself, just that you can call down with a bit weaker hands than normal. Since they are expanding their range to include all kinds of inferior hands, it will then be easier for you to pick them off when you are holding something that is even moderately strong.

The worst thing you could do is fall into their trap. If you start to play like the overaggressive players, you will end up losing money just like they do. Play a bit looser early on in a rebuy tournament, but don’t play like a maniac.

SUMMARY:Tournament Strategy for Rebuy Poker Tournaments

Rebuy tournaments are a popular variety of tournament play. The fact is that rebuy tournaments are very similar to any other tournament that doesn’t offer a rebuy period, but some players will overreact and make unnecessary adjustments that are detrimental to their game. The key is to avoid these mistakes while exploiting the players who make them.
